Bookmaker margin / overround calculator

Reveal the margin built into a complete market and compare margin-free probabilities and fair odds.

Overround is the sum of the implied probabilities of all odds in a market. In a fair market, that sum would be 100%. When it exceeds 100%, the difference is the bookmaker's margin.

Calculator

Calculate the market margin

Enter decimal odds from the same market. The calculator adds up the implied probabilities, shows the book %, removes the margin proportionally, and finds the fair odds without margin.

Use for Home, Draw, and Away from the same match.

Do not treat Double Chance 1X / X2 / 12 as a complete market for overround, because those selections overlap. For the true result margin, use the 1X2 market.

Formulas used

Implied probability = 1 ÷ decimal oddsBook % = sum of implied probabilitiesHouse margin = Book % − 100%Margin-free probability = selection's implied probability ÷ Book %Fair odds without margin = 1 ÷ no-margin probability

Example in football

In a 1X2 market with Home 2.10, Draw 3.40, and Away 3.50, the approximate implied probabilities are 47.62%, 29.41%, and 28.57%.

The Book % comes to 105.60% and the bookmaker's margin to 5.60%. Simple translation: the market is 5.6 points above a fair 100% market.

How to interpret

  • The closer to 100%, the lower the margin embedded in the market.
  • A low margin does not automatically imply positive EV.
  • A high margin usually makes it harder to find value.
  • To find a value bet, compare odds with estimated probability, fair odds, edge, and EV.

Common mistakes

Assessing a selection using market margin alone.

Less guesswork, more method: check market, line, odds, and context before drawing conclusions.

Adding odds from markets that are not complete or have overlapping selections.

Calculated the margin?

Good. Now the next step is to compare that price with real football probabilities. On Predora.si, you can see odds from multiple bookmakers, Active Model chance, EV, and match Factors to compare the context.

FAQ on overround and house margin

What is overround in betting?

Overround is the sum of the implied probabilities of all odds in a market. When it exceeds 100%, the difference is the bookmaker's margin.

How do I calculate the bookmaker's margin?

Convert each decimal odd into a probability using 1 divided by the odd, add them all up, and subtract 100%.

Are overround and vig the same thing?

In practice, the terms are used to refer to the margin embedded in the odds. Vig or juice usually describes the cost charged by the bookmaker.

Does a low overround mean a value bet?

A lower overround means a smaller bookmaker margin. Compare each selection’s odds with your estimated fair price to evaluate value.

Can I use the calculator for 1X2, Over/Under, and BTTS?

Yes. Use 1X2 with Home, Draw, and Away, and use two-outcome markets for Over/Under, BTTS Yes/No, and Over/Under corners.

Why shouldn't I calculate Double Chance as 1X/X2/12 together?

Because 1X, X2, and 12 overlap. For the true result margin, use the full 1X2 market.
